When you let your current employer know you have accepted a new job, they may try to keep you by offering you a counteroffer, or even trying to make you feel guilty. However, there are several reasons why accepting a counteroffer typically ends badly and why you should not accept it. ]

Some things to carefully consider:

1. According to the National Employment Association, 80 percent of employees who decide to accept a counteroffer are no longer with the company six months later. Think about what will happen if you stay. You’ve lost the trust of your employer and also the trust of the employer you committed to come to work for, essentially burning two bridges at once. Your relationship with your boss and co-workers will be damaged, and you will likely be among the first to get laid off if cuts are made.

2. Identify the reasons why you wanted to leave in the first place. Common reasons are wanting a new challenge, needing a location change, looking for better opportunities for advancement or more money. Unhappiness in your work environment and wanting better job security are also especially important.

3. Recognize that your boss wants you to stay because it’s inconvenient and expensive for them to replace you, not because of your value. If they valued you, they would have offered you a raise and/or perks before now. If you have to threaten to quit in order to get what you want and deserve from your employer, you are doing yourself a disservice by remaining employed there.

4. You have broken your commitment to your prospective employer, which will be perceived as unprofessional and unethical. This will affect your reputation negatively. You will have lost the opportunity to gain employment with that company in the future, and possibly others that associate with them.
