Director of SEO & GEO – Remote W-2 Contract-to-Hire

United States

Our client is a rapidly growing, independent performance marketing and media agency working with more than 30 brands across CPG, healthcare, DTC, B2B, and ecommerce.

The agency combines media, performance marketing, organic search, ecommerce, and analytics to help modern businesses grow. It has expanded significantly over the past three years and is continuing to invest in senior talent, stronger capabilities, and the infrastructure needed for its next stage of growth.

As search evolves beyond traditional rankings and into AI-generated answers, the agency is seeking a Director of SEO & GEO to lead its organic search vision and build a modern offering across SEO, generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization, and AI-search visibility.

This is not a role focused only on maintaining rankings or overseeing deliverables. The Director will lead the team, shape the agency’s methodology, advise clients, develop measurement standards, and help grow the agency’s organic search practice across existing and prospective accounts.

The environment is collaborative, entrepreneurial, and fast-moving. This is an opportunity to work closely with senior leadership, make a visible impact across the agency, and help define how brands earn visibility as search continues to change.

The Role

The Director of SEO & GEO will lead organic growth strategy across traditional search engines and emerging AI-driven platforms.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead SEO and GEO strategy across a portfolio of more than 30 brands and multiple industries.
  • Establish the agency’s organic search vision, methodology, service standards, and strategic roadmap.
  • Develop strategies that improve brand visibility across Google, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and other emerging search platforms.
  • Maintain strong SEO fundamentals across technical health, content strategy, internal architecture, structured data, schema, entity authority, crawlability, indexation, and site performance.
  • Build a repeatable approach to generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization that helps clients earn mentions, citations, and recommendations within AI-generated answers.
  • Design and oversee testing programs to evaluate emerging organic-search tactics, identify what works, and scale successful approaches across clients.
  • Develop practical measurement frameworks for emerging search, including AI citation share, mention share, generative share of voice, branded search lift, referral traffic, assisted conversions, and other relevant indicators.
  • Create credible reporting approaches for clients with different levels of analytics, attribution, and tracking maturity.
  • Translate technical findings and performance data into clear business recommendations and compelling client narratives.
  • Present strategies, proposals, performance findings, business reviews, and recommendations to senior client stakeholders.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients on organic growth, technical SEO, content, digital authority, and AI-driven discovery.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop the SEO team while establishing clear expectations and quality standards.
  • Review strategies, audits, reporting, and client deliverables to ensure the work is thoughtful, accurate, and commercially relevant.
  • Partner with paid media, analytics, account strategy, creative, development, and operations teams to create integrated solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce or expand organic search services within existing client relationships.
  • Build the business case for account expansion and partner with client leaders to present and sell additional services.
  • Support new-business pitches, proposals, scoping, staffing recommendations, and prospective-client strategy.
  • Help grow the organic search practice, including its revenue, capabilities, processes, tools, and market positioning.

What We Are Looking For

Required

  • At least seven years of experience in SEO, organic growth, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience owning SEO strategy and business outcomes, rather than focusing only on execution.
  • Experience leading an SEO team, department, practice, or function.
  • Strong technical SEO knowledge, including crawlability, indexation, site architecture, structured data, schema, migrations, redirects, rendering, and Core Web Vitals.
  • Experience developing content, authority, entity, and internal-linking strategies.
  • Hands-on experience with AI search, generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization, or other emerging organic-search practices.
  • Strong knowledge of GA4, Google Search Console, Semrush, Ahrefs, or similar SEO and analytics platforms.
  • Ability to create measurement frameworks and connect organic performance to broader client and business objectives.
  • Strong client-facing skills and confidence presenting complex strategies and performance findings to senior stakeholders.
  • Experience leading business reviews, building presentations, and clearly explaining the value of SEO.
  • Experience mentoring and developing SEO professionals.
  • Ability to manage multiple brands, industries, priorities, and levels of data maturity simultaneously.
  • Commercial confidence and experience supporting sales, upselling, account expansion, or new-business pitches.

Preferred

  • Agency or multi-client experience.
  • Experience building or expanding an SEO, GEO, or organic-growth practice.
  • Experience carrying a revenue target, managing department financial performance, or contributing directly to practice growth.
  • Experience presenting to executive audiences.
  • Understanding of how large language models retrieve, evaluate, weight, and cite information.
  • Experience measuring AI-search mentions, citations, share of voice, referral activity, or related visibility signals.
  • Experience with complex websites, enterprise platforms, ecommerce, multi-location businesses, or large-scale migrations.
  • Experience working closely with paid media, analytics, content, creative, development, and account strategy teams.

Who Will Thrive Here

  • You can move comfortably between high-level strategy and the practical details required to execute it.
  • You stay ahead of changes in search and would rather test a promising idea than simply repeat conventional wisdom.
  • You can speak with engineers about rendering, crawl behavior, schema, and site architecture, then explain to a senior client why those issues matter to visibility, revenue, and growth.
  • You enjoy leading people, advising clients, solving ambiguous problems, and creating structure in an evolving environment.
  • You also think commercially. You recognize opportunities to expand client relationships, develop new services, and demonstrate why companies should invest more in organic visibility.
  • Most importantly, you are energized by the opportunity to help create the playbook for AI search rather than inherit one that is already finished.

Why Join

  • Search is being redefined, and this role offers the opportunity to help lead that change rather than react to it.
  • You will have visibility across the agency, direct access to senior leadership, and meaningful influence over strategy, team development, client growth, measurement, and future capabilities.
  • Rather than stepping into a highly layered organization, you will join a growing independent agency where strong ideas can be tested quickly and where your work will have a clear impact on clients, the team, and the business.
